Synopsis
Incredibly, the genesis of Dostoyevsky's novella The Gambler is the inspiration for this feeble romantic comedy, which consistently belies the fact it was directed by Rob Reiner, the man who gave us When Harry Met Sally.... Luke Wilson is utterly devoid of passion, whether as the writer trying to pen a bestseller to pay off his gambling debts to some Cuban thugs or as the hero of his 1920s-set story, who is hopelessly in love with Sophie Marceau's society sophisticate. Kate Hudson overcompensates both as the stenographer helping him meet his deadline and the various maids who bewitch him in the dictation sequences.
