Synopsis

Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat's screenplay for this witty and suspenseful thriller about a missing Czech scientist bears an uncanny resemblance to an earlier classic they had a hand in, Alfred Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes. Reinforcing the link is the reappearance here of Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne as the cricket-mad eccentrics Charters and Caldicott. The dashing Rex Harrison evidently enjoys himself as the bemused British spy and Margaret Lockwood as the scientist's daughter does well to keep up with him. It's fast, furious and funny but, even with that master of atmosphere Carol Reed as director, it could have done with a couple of fresh tricks to keep us guessing.
