Synopsis

This amiable, exotic road movie won Tony Gatlif the best director prize at the 2004 Cannes film festival (jury president Quentin Tarantino was apparently a big fan), but the film's spicy charms might not be to everyone's tastes. Toothsome lead characters Zano (Romain Duris) and Naima (Lubna Azabal) are sitting round naked in their Paris flat one day and spontaneously decide to make a pilgrimage to Algeria, where both their families hail from. Making their way on foot, car and eventually boat through France, Spain and across the Mediterranean, the two meet gypsies (subjects of many a Gatlif movie), seductive flamenco dancers and, once in Algeria, hostile locals. There's not really a lot of plot here, but Gatlif's camera lingers lovingly on his sexy stars and serves up big dollops of funky world music on the soundtrack and, by the end, the film casts its own dreamy spell.
