Synopsis

Irish director Lenny Abrahamson's debut feature Adam & Paul was a Samuel Beckett-inspired tragicomedy about two Dublin junkies. His follow-up swaps locale and characters but retains the same darkly amusing tone as it follows the (mis)adventures of Josie (Pat Shortt), the simpleton caretaker of a ramshackle rural petrol station. Lumbered with a young teenage assistant (Conor J Ryan) by his absent boss, Josie finds the solitary equilibrium of his lonely existence disturbed and initially struggles to cope with an unexpected and novel friendship. Centred on a heart-rending performance from award-winning stand-up comedian Shortt, this low-key drama unfolds with gentle pathos, while also painting a believably sparse portrait of a dying rural community. Abrahamson uses the scenic locations to good effect and the supporting cast includes Anne-Marie Duff. But the film's heavy-handed symbolism does weaken the impact of later dramatic developments.
