Synopsis

The nursery rhyme Solomon Grundy is the inspiration for the title - and fictional Nova Scotia location - of this Canadian comedy drama. A laid-back political satire, it sees a small island community form a republic after losing their traditional fishing rights. But the federal government refuses to take the inhabitants seriously, prompting them to buy a nuclear-armed Soviet submarine. Though the film makes salient points about individual rights and freedoms, it's undermined by a lack of bite and thematic focus. Instead, it deals with stereotypes and easy targets, switching awkwardly between lazy laughs and more solemn events. The best moments come courtesy of the Russian crew, while leading man Paul Gross (Due South) has plenty of roguish charm as the local mayor/minister.
