Synopsis

Wonderful, madcap comedy from the genre's golden period, with Irene Dunne utterly enchanting in her first comic starring role as the author of the Peyton Place of its day, who hits the big city and falls for the book's illustrator, debonair Melvyn Douglas. They make a delightful couple, for a while, and that's the main theme of Sidney Buchman's clever, twist-laden screenplay. There's excellent support from a fabulous array of Columbia character actors, notably disapproving aunts Elisabeth Risdon and Margaret McWade, and Stanislavsky-trained émigré director Richard Boleslawski has the good sense to sit back and let the cast get on with it.
