Synopsis

The Silver Fleet (1943) box art This British wartime flag-waver boasts the magic names of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, but they were only producers - it was actually written and directed by Vernon Sewell and Gordon Wellesley. Their influence may well account for the too-stately progress of the tale, in which shipping engineer Ralph Richardson poses as a traitor in Nazi-occupied Holland in order to destroy the U-boat he's just had built. Richardson's performance is never less than convincing and so is the story once it gets going.
