Synopsis
Born the son of a working-class washerwoman, Edward Henry "Denry" Machin (Alec Guinness) sets his sights on upward mobility and vows to amount to something, taking comfort in his burgeoning reputation as a clever and charming social climber. Glynis Johns and Petula Clark co-star in this comedic tale of pluck and ambition (released as The Promoter in the United States) based on Arnold Bennett's novel.
