Synopsis

Only Yesterday (1991) box art In this nostalgic adult animé from Little Norse Prince director Isao Takahata, a frustrated 20-something office worker called Taeko takes a break from her boring job and goes to visit relatives in the country. Takahata employs a flashback structure to contrast Taeko's dead-end life in the present with her youth in the 1960s when she was full of optimism for her future, and the comparison also strikes a note with the reality that was the recession-hit Japan of the 1990s. If you enjoy a good wallow, this will be a melancholic treat.
