Synopsis

Bear Island (1979) box art Few authors have been as frequently translated to the big screen with as little success as Alistair MacLean. In a competitive field, this is among the very worst adaptations. Obviously unimpressed by the story of fascists bidding for world domination by means of meteorological mastery, director Don Sharp virtually rejects plot in favour of a series of earnest conversations in ludicrous accents, and the glut of action sequences never remotely threatens to set pulses racing. Consequently, character specialists such as Donald Sutherland, Vanessa Redgrave and Richard Widmark are as out of place as a bikini in the Arctic.
