Synopsis

Sigourney Weaver turns in a bold performance as a high-functioning autistic woman in this potentially dour yet carefully balanced tragicomedy from Welsh director Marc Evans. She's full of wide-eyed wonder as Linda, whose ordered life in a remote Canadian town is disrupted by the news that her daughter is dead. Alan Rickman plays Alex, the hangdog loner who was driving the car in which her child was killed. He's looking for a place to dump his guilt, but receives none of the admonishment he feels he deserves. As Evans explores the relationship between Alex, Linda and her neighbour Maggie (Carrie-Anne Moss), he finds genuine laugh-out-loud moments amid the aching tragedy. In fact, Weaver's blunt delivery - viewing the world in black and white - allows the film to bypass saccharine sentimentality and cut directly to the heart of the characters. Revelations about Rickman's past are perhaps too much icing on the cake, but this is still a thoroughly satisfying and spiritually nourishing piece of cinema.
