Synopsis

Bulletproof director Ernest Dickerson gives a hackneyed topic an interesting spin in this gritty gangster thriller based on the novel by career criminal Donald Goines. Centred around a strong though unsympathetic performance from rapper DMX, it tells the posthumous story of drug dealer and all-round brute King David whose low-life ways lead to his violent undoing. Thematically there's nothing new in the expletive-riddled cocktail of guns, addiction and crime, but it's the film's stylish execution that makes its mark. The urban noir atmosphere as aspiring reporter David Arquette unravels events using David's audio-taped diaries has a pulpy appeal, while the unusually inventive visuals help to offset the plot's overall predictability.
