Synopsis

This is an excellent adaptation of James Herbert's fantasy adventure about a man protecting his family from villainous intent when he's reincarnated as a dog after a fatal car crash. Directed by co-writer Carlo Carlei in a breathtaking style complete with razzle-dazzle visuals, what basically sounds like a children's story becomes one accessible to adults thanks to a host of serious issues raised in a galvanising human context. Good voiceover work from Matthew Modine (as Fluke the mixed-breed puppy) and Samuel L Jackson (playing the wise, older dog, Rumbo) dovetails neatly with fine performances from human stars Nancy Travis and Eric Stoltz in a charming and touching tale sprinkled with special magic.
