Synopsis
Instead of merrily fiddling on the roof, here's Topol cheerfully trifling with the truth. He plays a Russian deserter masquerading as a Slav interpreter who speaks 13 languages, helping major David Niven run a displaced persons camp in Austria at the end of the Second World War. Both are in conflict over local girl Anna Karina, but J Lee Thompson's relaxed direction fails to generate sufficient tension from the situation. Niven's punctilious dignity is as memorable as ever, however.
