Synopsis

Based on Bess Streeter Aldrich's 1928 novel A Lantern in Her Hand, this made-for-TV western approaches the harsh realities of frontier life from a woman's perspective. Tutored in music and art, Nancy McKeon has social ambitions, but, despite his promises, sweetheart Adrian Pasdar returns from the American Civil War and informs her that they are going to raise their family on a homestead in the middle of untamed Nebraska. Although it tries to depict the covered wagon trek, the extremes of the prairie climate and the dangers posed by native Americans as authentically as possible, this presents a highly romanticised vision throughout.
