Synopsis

Hallam Foe (2006) box art Young Adam director David Mackenzie takes another walk down the twisted path of life with this pleasingly demented yet bittersweet coming-of-age tale. Tightly scripted from the novel by Peter Jinks, it stars a superb Jamie Bell as the eponymous teen eccentric and obsessive voyeur. Convinced his mum's mysterious death was the work of his new stepmother (an icy Claire Forlani), penniless Hallam flees to Edinburgh, where he becomes sexually fixated on another woman (Sophia Myles) who bears an eerie resemblance to the late Mrs Foe. The events that unfold are intimate and unpredictable, painting a warped though charming portrait of adolescent angst. Bell and Myles are particularly electric together, infusing their complex relationship with a powerful erotic charge. But beyond the natural performances and atmospheric visuals, it's the rich seam of black humour that weaves the most magic.
