Synopsis

Carrington VC (1954) box art Although David Niven had no formal acting training, he was capable of giving performances of both subtlety and power. Unfortunately, producers typecast him in debonair roles and only rarely gave him the chance to tackle more demanding characters. Here he shows the depth of his instinctive talent as a war hero driven to theft by delays in repayments of his expenses. Niven's shifts between despair, dignity and determination are masterly, and he is well supported by Margaret Leighton as his shrewish wife. Director Anthony Asquith handles the trial scenes with great assurance, keeping the verdict in doubt to the end.
