Synopsis

Androcles and the Lion (1952) box art George Bernard Shaw's Roman fable proved to be an interesting and quirky one-off when it was brought to the screen, but it failed to grab the public's attention. Under the oppressive regime of Howard Hughes, this RKO movie was a long time in the making, and stars Victor Mature and Jean Simmons found greater success with their next foray into Roman history together, The Robe. There was virtually no interest at all in this opus, despite a charming performance from Alan Young as Androcles; obviously talking to animals was his forte as he became a big TV star opposite "Mr Ed", the talking horse. The imported British supporting cast, including Robert Newton, behave like fish out of water under Chester Erskine's shambolic direction.
