Synopsis
In this inept and lengthy adaptation of James Clavell's bestseller, Bryan Brown plays a 19th-century European trader who establishes his headquarters in Hong Kong, despite opposition from and frequent attacks by rivals. Brown is a hero we're supposed to like, but don't, while Joan Chen adds a touch of Oriental elegance to the sprawling plot, over which director Daryl Duke seems to have no control. Shot in China, it might just as well be on a spare backlot.
