Synopsis

This marvellously authentic family epic from Warner Bros is set in Australia and contains superb performances (and moderately believable Australian accents) from Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr. Backing up the two leads in this sheep-shearing saga is a strong cast (Peter Ustinov and Glynis Johns add fine support) and excellent technical credits, notably the striking Technicolor photography from Jack Hildyard and an atmospheric Dimitri Tiomkin score, with a main theme featuring mouth-organist Tommy Reilly. The film earned five Oscar nominations, a tribute to its co-producer/director Fred Zinnemann, whose exquisite handling of the personal drama (he doesn't let the scale dwarf the people) proves once again what a fine film-maker he was.
