Synopsis
After several outings as Wong Fei-Hong, the exciting Jet Li plays another character from Chinese legend in this hugely entertaining adventure that recalls the kind of knockabout costume dramas on which the Hong Kong film industry was founded. The plot is slightly surreal, as Li enters a kung fu tournament to win the hand of a young woman, and Li's mother (Josephine Siao) steps in to save the family honour when he - apparently deliberately - loses. The lively blend of action and comedy is typified by the pantomimic contest to reach the top of a wooden tower defended by the athletic Sibelle Hu, and the final kick-fighting bout between Li and regional governor Zhao Wen Zhou. While Li holds sway, this is also an excellent vehicle for Siao, one of Hong Kong's top female stars.
