Synopsis

Judy Garland fans will love this better-than-average TV movie devoted to the legendary diva's early career. Based on Christopher Finch's acclaimed biography, its main focus is on the formative incidents that would impact on Frances Ethel Gumm's troubled psyche later in her iconic superstar life. From "The Gumm Sisters" to lasting fame in The Wizard of Oz, Judy is shown pleasing her driven stage mother (Piper Laurie) and forging a moving relationship with her father (Don Murray) while trying to retain a normal childhood within an MGM studio system providing the pills to keep her thinner, more alert and energetic. It's given the stamp of authenticity by director Jackie Cooper (himself a contemporary "Little Rascals" star), and Broadway's Annie sensation Andrea McArdle completes the showbiz illusion with terrific renditions of Garland's signature evergreens You Made Me Love You, Zing Went the Strings of My Heart and, naturally, Over the Rainbow.
