Synopsis

In this intriguing romantic drama from the pen of novelist and regular Martin Scorsese collaborator Richard Price, Robert De Niro plays the "Mad Dog" of the title, a shy, quiet police forensics photographer. As a reward for saving the life of mobster and aspiring stand-up comedian Bill Murray, De Niro is given a "present" - Uma Thurman - but the arrangement becomes complicated when the mismatched duo fall in love. The direction from John McNaughton, notorious for Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, is subtle, even though he has difficulty keeping the diverse elements of the story - romance, black comedy, gangster thriller - together. He is helped, however, by a nicely understated performance from De Niro, and a rather strange one from Murray. David Caruso, in his pre-NYPD Blue days, pops up as De Niro's best chum.
