Synopsis

Reader's Digest, of all publications, flirted with film production in the 1970s, and to its credit produced two very watchable Mark Twain movies, of which this is the second, continuing Jeff East's characterisation of Huckleberry Finn from the earlier Tom Sawyer. Both movies were shot on location and handsomely filmed in Panavision, and both had totally forgettable scores by the Sherman brothers, then coming off a roll with Mary Poppins and The Jungle Book. There's some clever casting in this one, particularly David Wayne and Harvey Korman as the river conmen, but political correctness dilutes Paul Winfield's all-too-noble Jim. Veteran J Lee Thompson - a surprising choice - directs perfectly adequately, but the whole is without sparkle or distinction, and Reader's Digest soon withdrew from movie-making in favour of what it knew best.
