Synopsis

One of the crowning achievements of New German Cinema, this is a typically haunting Werner Herzog movie in which an eccentric character pursues an overpowering obsession in the most inhospitable of environments. Klaus Kinski dominates the action as 16th-century conquistador Don Lope de Aguirre, who ruinously rebels against his commander in order to continue his fanatical search for the legendary city of El Dorado. As if shooting in the depths of the Peruvian jungle wasn't difficult enough, the members of the cast were never permitted to see the script, and it says much for their improvisational powers that there isn't a single weak performance.
