Synopsis

This is a fine adaptation of Rosemary's Baby author Ira Levin's dark tale about a social climber who kills his wealthy girlfriend when her pregnancy threatens her inheritance. It stars a cast-against-type Robert Wagner, cleverly made-up as a villain and relishing the kind of role he seldom played again. This film noir is actually shot in bright daylight colours by cinematographer Lucien Ballard, who makes excellent use of locations. A young Joanne Woodward plays the victim and a superb Mary Astor is the wretched Wagner's mother. Interestingly, in the novel the murderer's identity is hidden; in the movie, you know who did it and watch as he's tracked down. Avoid the inferior 1991 remake with Matt Dillon.
