Synopsis

In 1934 John Ford directed Judge Priest, a tale about a benevolent Southern judge, played by Will Rogers. Ford revisits the character in this drama, with Charles Winninger taking over the lead role. This time the judge is standing for re-election in Fairfield, Kentucky, in 1905, but he has some serious competition. There are comic and romantic strands to the story as well as serious subplots involving rape and racism - a mix that modern audiences may find naive or offensive, or both. Whatever the views of the critics or the public, Ford sometimes cited this as one of his personal favourites, and his feeling for the story and the period is plain to see.
