Synopsis

Having apparently peaked with Annie Hall and Manhattan, Woody Allen returned to familiar territory and top form with this warm, multi-stranded, near-nepotistic family saga that contains the usual awkward dates, clandestine meetings and failed marriages. Allen's neurotic TV producer has some memorable comic scenes revolving around a cancer scare, but the maestro ultimately cedes centre stage to the siblings of the title - Mia Farrow's strait-laced Hannah, Barbara Hershey's unfaithful Lee and Dianne Wiest's kooky Holly. There's a nod to Allen's director hero Ingmar Bergman with the casting of Max von Sydow, but the real surprise here is an urbane, coquettish Michael Caine, who collected his first Oscar for a terrific performance as Farrow's straying husband.
